  12. This is a very basic quick start guide for ProJPEG 3.1. More detailed
  13. documentation can be found in the ProJPEG Manual if needed.

  16. 1: Installation:

  18. Simply copy ProJPEG 3.1 to your .Photoshop\Plugins\Formats directory.
  19. ProJPEG will be available the next time you launch Photoshop as
  20. "ProJPEG" in the format menu of both the open and save as dialogs in
  21. Photoshop. If you have had a previous version of ProJPEG installed you
  22. should also remove the older version from Photoshop\Plugins\Formats when
  23. installing 3.1.

  25. To confirm that ProJPEG is installed correctly and Photoshop is
  26. recognizing the plug-in you can look under the Help->About Plugin menu
  27. in Photoshop for ProJPEG. If it appears there it's installed correctly
  28. and you are ready to go.

  30. ProJPEG is a file format plug-in and will appear in the format menu in
  31. Photoshop's open and save as dialogs as "ProJPEG". You will need to
  32. check the "Show all formats" option to access this menu when opening
  33. files, but normally that is not needed. Photoshop will pick a default
  34. method to open JPEG files for you when you double click on a file to
  35. open it from the Finder.

  38. 2: General usage:

  40. To save a file using ProJPEG, select the "Save as..." menu in Photoshop,
  41. then in the save as dialog, select "ProJPEG" from the formats menu and
  42. click OK. The ProJPEG options dialog will then be show for you to set
  43. compression parameters.

  45. Minimally, you should adjust the quality slider to the desired amount
  46. while taking note of the image preview for quality and the file size
  47. display for final file size. This is the absolute and accurate file size
  48. of you JPEG file, so it's hard to go wrong in the options dialog.

  50. You have accurate and immediate feedback for image quality and
  51. appearance as you chose the compression parameters.

  54. 3: Tips for best results:
  55.  
  56. At the factory defaults ProJPEG╩typically outperforms Adobe's JPEG at
  57. default settings. If you just want to click the button, you can click
  58. the button. However, all images can be saved using more aggressive
  59. compression settings than the defaults.

  61. You should take advantage of the interactivity and feedback provided by
  62. ProJPEG╩to find the best settings for each individual image. JPEG
  63. compression will vary image by image.

  65. It is also best to start with very low quality settings and work up
  66. until the image looks good enough instead of starting with high quality
  67. settings to get the best file size to quality when you save. That
  68. generally avoids saving files with over-kill settings.
